This Wednesday, the Portuguese team beat Ireland 2-1, at Estádio Algarve, in a group A match in the qualifying phase for the 2022 World Cup.
The referee awarded a penalty after 15 minutes, but CR7 failed to convert. Right at half-time, Ireland scored and were winning for most of the match.
Defender John Egan opened the scoring in the 45th minute, in the final moments of the first half, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s double, in the 89th and 90+6 minutes, ensured the Portuguese triumph.
A historic encore for CR7, who becomes the player with the most goals at the service of a national team : 111, two more than the Iranian Ali Daei.
With this victory, Portugal stands out at the top of the group, with 10 points, three more than Serbia, who did not play today, while Luxembourg, which today beat Azerbaijan 2-1, is third, with six, following if Ireland and Azerbaijan without any points.
Portugal returns to the field on Saturday, to play a private game against Qatar (17:45), before facing away Azerbaijan, on Tuesday at 17:00, in another qualifying match for the Championship of the world.
